Run 68. Mount Duneed. 16/1/2020.
Having been to an Elton John farewell concert in Melbourne in December, today was an ideal opportunity to visit Mt Duneed just out of Geelong where Elton played an outdoor concert on December 7th. This was also a perfect location as it was just on 20km from our house in Torquay. Was able to get a ride from my daughter to the winery where Elton played and was pleased to see about 100 portable toilets set up. Now normally for an organised run there are 300 runners for every toilet, but today the ratio was reversed as I was the only runner and I had 100’s to pick from. Disappointing that I didn’t actually need to go.
Pretty straight forward run, but as usual down this way it was windy, and as I made my way south along the Surf Coast highway I was running into that wind. To make matters worse, the highway was pretty busy and as each truck went past at 100km / hr it was like being hit by a wave. Fortunately the east / west part of the run was not too bad so once the highway was done I was able to enjoy the last four kilometers. Shame there wasn’t one of those toilets around that area. Finished in a time of 1:51:42 but given I thought I started towards the top of Mt Duneed should have been faster. Mt Duneed wasn’t really a mountain and should really have been called Duneed Hill.
My Three Learnings
Having lots of toilet options is only good if you need to go.
Running into a stiff wind is like swimming into a rip.
Running towards oncoming trucks on a highway is like being hit by waves.
