Run 67. On Fire. 11/1/2020.

Still trying to fit my runs in around a fair amount of smoke that seems to be affecting everywhere in Victoria. But after a wind change I got a day that wasn’t too bad and decided to visit a few fire stations in honor of the efforts by all those involved in fighting the fires.

First stop was a Metropolitan Fire Station in Windsor. Most of the fires are being fought by the Country Fire Authority but they don’t have many stations in the city. From there it was straight up Chapel St, but given it was Saturday morning, that wasn’t a speed friendly decision. Rather than doing more MFB stations I decided to head to the headquarters of Emergency Victoria. This is the centre of operations for fires and is based in Burnley. Snapped the required selfie and then had my own challenge of getting back over the multiple train lines, then city link and finally the Yarra river. Having only hit one dead end I made my way through the maze but ended up at the bottom of the Punt Rd hill. Not the end of the world but another section that has already been discovered as slow.  But with my legs feeling OK, the hill wasn’t too bad and I was able to enjoy the benefit of running down the other side.

All power to the fireries for their magnificent efforts of late – they spurred me on to a good time of 1:46:21.

My Three Learnings.

  1. Firefighting, like half marathons, is currently an endurance event.

  2. Crossing the Eastlink and Yarra around Burnley is confusing.

  3. Chapel St on a Saturday morning is not a good option for speed.
