Run 57. Millenium House Anglesea. 30/11/2019.

Another small town discovery run, this time in Anglesea. Which turns out is where I spent the first New Years Eve of the 21st century. Only I forgot that the house where we spent that time was at the top of a hill. What started out as a pleasant coastal run quickly turned into the hilliest run so far. So after a flat first 500m I turned onto Harvey street and made my way to the top of the climb to the house on Noble St. Call out to Lib / Clark / Don / Yve / Simon / Helen and Caroline.

Got the advantage of running back down the hill so even out my time and before long back in the center of town. But that only accounted for 5km so headed out of town again. Anglesea is flat but only if you stay by the ocean, and instead I headed inland towards the coalmine. But whilst running along Coalmine Rd I came across yet another road closure due to road works. That’s 5 runs in a row impacted by roadworks.

In the middle of nowhere met another local runner who quickly pointed me towards a scenic way to run back into Anglesea. I could tell he was local because he turned off the road before the mountain that made my earlier hill look like a bump. He was smarter than me. Slow trek up Messmate Track meant a fast time was hopeless but the views fantastic.

Nice run with great views and high heart rates. Did 1:52:33 but sort of enjoyed it.

My Three Learnings.

  1. 20 years ago I was younger and faster.

  2. Even remote dirt roads get closed for roadworks.

  3. Steep hills and gravel roads lack the traction needed for high speed running.
