Run 99. The First CoronaVirus mask. Glenrowan. 22/4/2020.

Another small town run, this time in and around Glenrowan. Central to the town is the imposing figure of Ned Kelly and as I took my selfie with the statue it dawned on me that Ned was possibly wearing the first version of a full face mask that would have protected him against CoronaVirus as well as bullets.

This run started in perfect conditions but with a lingering sore back I realised that I probably should have developed a warm up routine before running. Instead the first three or so kilometers were clunky as I got my body working. I’m guessing it takes an extra 1 kilometer for each 10 years you age.

I ran into Glenrowan on Wangandary road and made my way back to my car on the old Hume Highway that passed through Wangaratta. In its peak, this road would have been busy with traffic, but now that traffic was on the freeway and the Hume was quiet. But not deserted. I’m sure drivers in this area aren’t necessarily looking out for runners, so the onus was on me. The next time a car came along I was much more alert.

I didn’t plan it that way, but the run into Glenrowan was uphill, so the run back was slightly downhill, just as well as I am starting to feel the heavier schedule to finish the 100 in the year.

Ran 1:48 so respectful.

  1. Ned Kelly wore the first CoronaVirus mask before it was even needed.

  2. Warming up should be done before you start – not at the start.

  3. Need to pay attention to oncoming traffic whilst running on major roads.
