Run 77. The Long and not winding Road. 15/02/2020.
Took the opportunity to get a ride into central Geelong with my wife, as the run from Eastern beach to Torquay is about 22km – ideal. The only real problem is that the first 5km is pretty straight and that is followed by 12km of dead straight road. Crossed over the Barwon River on High St and for the second Saturday in a row, had to deal with some rowing traffic. Must be regatta season.
Once onto Torquay Rd I didn’t have to worry about directions for the next 12km so I could focus on understanding my heart rate. Running on the flat, early in the run and at a moderate speed, my heart rate sat around the 145 mark. This was easy. The next zone was when I pushed the speed a bit or went up a hill. Just over the 150 mark didn’t feel too bad but running all day at this rate was not an attractive option. Over the bigger hills it did nudge the 160 mark but fell quickly once over the top and the downhill helped it drop back.
Started to tire towards the end of the run but picked up the pace to run a kilometer around the 4:30 pace. This pushed my heart rate over 160 and in this zone my body was looking for a break.
Good heart learning day and a 1:50:36 wasn’t too bad given the hills.
My Three Learnings
When my heart rate is around 145, I could run all day.
When my heart rate is around 152, I think I have an hour left in me.
When my heart rate is around 160, I know I will need a break soon.
