Run 50. Singapore Sweat. 6/11/2019.

Maybe getting closer to the equator will help. The only two problems that Singapore has is the temperature and the humidity. Now either one is a challenge, but both – just too hard. Set off with the temperature at 29 degrees and the humidity touching 75%, it can’t possibly get much worse than this. When I finished it was 33 degrees and 75% humidity so I guess I was wrong.

And to make matters worse, the Singaporean government obviously don’t believe such conditions require access to drinking water. I only found 1 drinking fountain in the 21.1km course I ran along the Singapore River / Alexander Canal. Fortunately I was again running with my wife and she had $5 to buy a bottle of water that she shared with me. No wonder she is my favourite wife.

After running about 12km my wife peeled off and headed to the pool – and I pressed on towards the 21.1km target. I headed around the marina, plenty of water here but none to drink. I finally made it to the Sands Expo and Convention Centre and ducked inside to seek drinking water. The lady at “information” told me there was a drinking fountain on the 3rd floor in the next building, but then must have felt sorry for me and produced a small bottle of water. My new second best friend.

I headed back outside before realising that it was about 25 degrees cooler in the shopping precinct so headed back inside and ran around the shops for about 1.5km. Eventually had to head back to the hotel so outside again only to realise that the GPS hadn’t tracked me properly inside and I didn’t get full credit for the distance inside. But at least I cooled down.

Ran 1:51:37 but questions on GPS accuracy – but in that heat – who cares.

My Three Learnings

  1. Heat and humidity worse than just heat.

  2. In Singapore you need to supply your own water – or pay the price.

  3. Indoor running is cooler but the GPS doesn’t like it.
