Run 36. Route 30 Tram Race. 4/09/2019.
On a nice Wednesday afternoon it was time for another tram line run. This time the shortest of all tram lines – the number 30. This tram line is only 2.9km in length, from Docklands to St Vincent’s Hospital and provides an excellent opportunity to beat the tram. Got a good start, but this is a city run at peak hour and mainly uphill, so plenty of hurdles to overcome.
Felt I had a good run with the lights until Queen St. Got ahead again and then ran into the road / tunnel works at near the State Library. If this was a real race I would have had cause to protest – but Russell St the lights went my way and I caught up again. With the finish line (St Vincent’s) in sight, I took a few risks and got to the tram stop before the tram – victory is sweet.
Was even able to get a snapshot of myself at the stop with the number 30 tram in the background – go me.
Because it was such a short tram route I was now only 6.5km into the run and had already pushed my heart rate way over the 155 target. But fortunately I had a long downhill past the hospital and was able to recover.
The rest of the run was much more relaxed – until I got a phone call to let me know my daughter had gone into surgery to have her appendix removed. Suddenly my discomfort from running was put into perspective. The time of 1:49:13 obviously had the benefit of the fast tram race.
My Three Learnings
Trams are beatable.
Roadworks are not pedestrian friendly.
Winners are grinners.
