Run 35. Happy Father’s Day. 31/08/2019.

Decided to do a run for Fathers Day (weekend) and honor my Dad by running to three streets that bear his name. First up Grenville St in Hampton, only 6km from my home in Elwood. Next John St in Sandringham, that’s only another 2.5km away. Tick. And finally why not do a town that is named after the Bussell family – Busselton WA. Well the reason is it’s 3335km away or as google maps suggests, 672 hours on foot. Sorry Dad, two out of three ain’t bad. I love my Dad, but not that much. Happy Fathers Day.

My intent for this run was to start slowly and build the pace as I went. Trouble is with fresh legs and a tail wind, I ran a bit too quick for the first 5km. Had to reset for the 2nd 5km and build from there. Even that got harder as I turned for home and found that a head wind was problematic for a fast finish. But overall reasonably successful, running the last 5km into the wind faster than the first 5km. And given I broke 5 minutes for the last km, it seems I just kept getting faster – if I had run a full marathon and kept improving at that rate, I probably would have broken the 3 min kilometer towards the end. That is exactly what I need to break the one hour.

Maybe I am still on course to do just that – just saying.

My Three Learnings

  1. Hard to build speed if you go too fast at the start.

  2. Head winds are like uphill and should be avoided.

  3. Western Australia is a long way away.
