Run 12 – Caulfield Racecourse. 8/06/2019.

New shoe day. The theory is that new shoes should be broken in before using them for a long run – well I decided to test this proposition. Turns out the shoes were fine and did not cause any blisters or rub points. That was my conclusion – at the 2km point. Later on, I had a different point of view and my next pair will be “worn in” on a couple of shorter runs.

Beautiful, cool morning and time to test out a couple of circuits of Caulfield Racecourse. Timed my split around the circumference of the track and to my delight, my time for 2400m would have placed me 19th in the 2018 Caulfield Cup field, not bad for a runner against horses.

Finished my laps of Caulfield racecourse near the Caulfield station so took the opportunity to cut through the station tunnel. It was 21 months ago that I ran the Caulfield station as part of the Metro train station challenge and it reminded me of that run. And that’s when I went the wrong way. Only a momentary lapse but could be critical if I was close to the one hour limit – got to concentrate.

Got back onto Princes Hwy (or Dandenong Rd) and headed back towards Elwood, mostly downhill from there so probably negatively split the run. Did have to stop once to take phone call and recheck bearings and distance, but worth it as set a new record fast time of 1:47:02. Saturdays definitely fast days.

My Three learnings

  1. Shoes need to be worn in before use in a proper race.

  2. New shoes are faster than old shoes.

  3. Reminiscing about past runs can cause distraction.
