Run 92. Ocean Grove. 6/4/2020.

Spent a bit of time in Ocean Grove with friends during the summer when I was at uni. So nice to run around the town to see the changes from the 80’s. I started in Barwon Heads and ran across the bridge, this road joining the two towns was busier than Chapel St that I ran only a couple of days ago. Maybe the virus doesn’t like the sea air?

I then ran along the south side of Ocean Grove near the water before heading north with the intention of running around the whole town. But what had changed since the eighties was a whole new development on the north side – so I ran around that as well. Once I hit Grub Rd I headed south again and then west along Shell Rd. Shell Rd looks flat on a two dimensional map, but it reminded me of the roller coaster road near Torquay – I could do without the hills.

From there, back into the centre of the town which did remind me a bit of the Ocean Grove of the eighties, and back towards Barwon Heads. Still more traffic on the Barwon / Heads Ocean Grove bridge than Chapel St in Melbourne. Ran 1:49:03 but I blame the hills for the slower than recent times. Ironically the course shape looked like a boat that had dropped anchor – unplanned but appropriate for such a nice place.

My Three Learnings.

  1. Coastal town runs aren’t always flat.

  2. Steep downhill heart rate approximates recovery heart rate.

  3. Running on the coast can result in a ship shaped course.
