Run 62. Beep test. 18/12/2019.
Designed this run around the fact it was going to be very hot. For this reason I decided to stay close to the shore and the drinking fountains on the path. And to add interest I set it up as a “beep test” so that I ran to the first tap and made that base camp. From there it was only about 800m to the first tap. Quick drink and turn around back to base.
Lap 1 completed, I then headed off to the second tap which was about 1.6km away near the outdoor gym. Another drink and headed back to base. By now I had completed just under 5km of the run. It was already getting towards 30 degrees so I allowed myself the luxury of grabbing a drink at the intermediate taps to fully test the impact of frequent drinking.
The third tap at the St Kilda Marina was just on 2.2km from base so this was roughly a 4.5 km lap and by the time I was back at base I was nearly half way through the run. More drinking and then off on my 4th lap to the drinking tap near the St Kilda skate park. This tap wasn’t far from previous tap but the lap was still 4.5km and I was now two thirds of the way done when I got back to base. The final lap was to the last drinking tap near Donavan’s restaurant. More drinking at the multitude of taps already encountered and I was starting to feel bloated.
Finished in a time of 1:50:25 and with the temperature now above 30, happy it was done.
My Three Learnings.
Hot weather, like body punches, slowly takes it toll.
Drinking water is good.
Drinking too much water, like drinking too much alcohol, doesn’t optimise your performance.
