Run 54. Random Run #1. 20/11/2019.
All of my runs to date have been pretty much planned before I started. But I also wanted to test a series of random runs. This means I will have no preconceived ideas about the course, which potentially clears the mind for a fast time.
With a bit of time up my sleeve I walked to Elsternwick station and caught the train to Richmond. From there it was my intent to catch the first train leaving Richmond and heading away from the city. Turned out to be the Pakenham line. From Richmond I planned to get off at the 15th station stop, but the reliability of trains (big build road / track works) in Melbourne meant it was terminating after just 13. That was Westall station. Soon the signs will say trains replacing buses.
Given I had no plan, Westall was as good as anywhere so I started running back towards the city with the intent of being as close as possible to my house when I hit the 21.1km mark. Even though I knew the area a bit, I decided to keep close to the Pakenham at first and then cut across to the Frankston line. Even with that blueprint I took a few clumsy turns that probably cost me time.
Finished on Elwood beach where my wife was waiting with a cool drink – nice on a warm day.
My Three Learnings
Not knowing where your run will be does not speed you up.
Trains in Melbourne still unpredictable.
Not drinking in temps over 20 degrees gets to you.
