Run 4 – The “Tan” 11/05/2019

Today I tested the use of performance enhancing injections to see if they have a positive effect on my time. I have read about many types of drugs that have been used, but I chose the readily available “flu injection”. I felt a bit ordinary after the injection but once I got running the full effects kicked in and I felt crap. I doubt this will be included in my optimised plan to break the hour.

Also tested including the “Tan” in my course today. Ran up Barkly St and onto St Kilda Rd and cut around Melbourne Grammar School towards the “Tan”. Noticed the fastest time around the Tan is 10:08 by Craig Mottram. This means he was still running at the 10 min mark – and so was I. We have this in common (just like falling over) so I am in good company.

Didn’t fall for the trap of stopping to drink water again as this surely only adds weight. I’m beginning to think that hydration might well be overrated as a tactic.

Got a bit lost trying to navigate the tunnels under the St Kilda junction and that also cost me a bit of time, but given I did this towards the end of the run, the sub one hour had already been compromised.

Eased up and enjoyed the last couple of km around the Elwood canal. Maybe enjoyed the scenery too much, and that probably cost me a bit more time. In the end ran 1:51:55 which wasn’t bad given the recovery from the near broken leg only days before.

My three learnings

  1. Flu injection not performance enhancing

  2. Getting lost in tunnels costs time.

  3. Don’t get distracted by the scenery.
