Run 39. 1977 VFL Grounds: Part 8. Lakeside Oval. New World Record. 14/09/2019.

On a beautiful Saturday morning I maintained the effort to finish off the 1977 VFL football grounds. This time it was the home of the then South Melbourne Swans at Lakeside Oval.

In 1977 it was a finals series based on the top 5 and whilst South Melbourne just made the top 5 they lost in the first week of finals and were out. What they didn’t realise at that time was only 4 years later they would relocate to Sydney.

Nice morning gave me the opportunity to run along the beach from Elwood to Albert Park before heading inland. Added a few kilometers by meandering through South Melbourne and back towards the Lakeside oval that is beside the lake. Quick lap of the oval and selfie with Bobby Skilton and headed back towards home. Had to make up a little bit of extra ground in St Kilda so detoured around some back streets and finished in a pretty standard 1:50:52.

And whilst my fastest time may not have improved much in the last few weeks, there is little doubt that the learnings generated are certainly helping overall. Out of nowhere Geoffrey Kamworor ran 57:59 to break the half marathon world record. Co-incident, I think not. A lot of my learnings appear to have been used by Geoffrey – your welcome.

My Three Learnings

  1. My learnings aren’t just for me, others can (and apparently have) benefited. I’m looking at you Geoffrey.

  2. Surging efforts take their toll.

  3. Over 40% of time in high heart rate zone leads to fatigue at end of run.
