Run 32. Zoology. 19/08/2019.

A Monday run with only 2 days “taper” to accommodate my work travel schedule. Decided to do a lap of the Melbourne Zoo and because I started and finished in Port Melbourne it meant that I could explore a little further north of the city.

Was able to avoid much of the city by running along the Yarra and up through Birrarung Marr and onto Spring St. As I turned the corner onto Brunswick St I noticed the number 11 tram also turning. This was meant to be an easy run but as soon as I saw the tram, it was race on. It was a full tram and peak hour so lots of slow stops for the tram meant I could stay with it all the way to Edinburgh Gardens. Finally I got stuck at the lights as it took off and whilst I almost caught it again – game over.

I turned onto the Inner Cir Rail Trail and headed towards the zoo. Lots of bikes – but out here they are orderly and polite. Not like the Yarra river bike path that was risky. Stopped and chatted at the lights and generally had a good time. Got to the zoo in good time due to the earlier race and after a quick lap I headed through Royal Park. Magnificent view of the Royal Children’s Hospital coming from this direction at night – gotta be proud of it. Love the Good Friday Appeal.

Back through the city and finished back in Port Melbourne with a time of 1:48:40.

My Three Learnings

  1. Being a bit competitive causes you to race unnecessarily.

  2. Riders on the Inner Cir Rail Trail aren’t as aggressive as those on the Yarra.

  3. The Royal Children’s Hospital looks spectacular at night from Royal Park – not necessarily a running learning.
