Run 30. Beer O’Clock. 1977 VFL Grounds: Part 5. Junction Oval. 14/08/2019.

Starting to focus on nutrition and hydration which coincided with a farewell at work before the run. Various duck products including red duck curry pies, duck sliders, skewers and cake. Washed down with beer – the perfect pre run feast. What could go wrong? And it turns out nothing did, in fact it was a really good run and I felt fully fuelled the whole run. An ideal blend of protein, carbs and hydration.

Having run the track on the north side of the river (and dodged all the bikes) I ventured onto the south side of the river to head out of town. And whilst the GPS suggests that I swam across the Yarra, and back,  at one stage, I can confirm I did actually stay on the south side.

Headed for the Junction Oval, home of the Fitzroy Lions in the season of 1977. Not a great year for the Lions as they finished 10th of 12. Ran a lap of the oval and got a selfie near the 85 year old grandstand which is next to the two year old cricket Victoria headquarters. A real contrast of the past and present.

Getting much better at holding a steady speed and despite the fuel load taken onboard minutes before I started, felt good for the entire run. Finished with a time of 1:53:09. That’s 3 runs in a row at the 1:53 tempo and body feeling OK.

My Three Learnings

  1. Beer is a good source of carbs and hydration – why isn’t it used more on course?

  2. Duck is an ideal protein for runners. Source pending (prefer Hoisin)

  3. South side of the river has less cyclists than the north side.
