Run 24 – 1977 VFL Grounds: Part 4. Princes Park. 24/07/2019
Having run to the “Mecca” of Victoria park, I now had to go to the other extreme, the enemy, Carlton. Princes Park was across the road from Whitley College where a number of my University friends lived – and we went to the footy (after 3/4 time when the gates were open) many times. But they were still the enemy so I went to watch them lose.
Ironically went past the modern AFL ground of Colonial Stadium / Telstra Dome / Etihad Stadium / Marvel Stadium as I headed through the city towards Carlton. This time I decided to run blind – and by that I mean not looking at my watch to check distance, time or heart rate. I just ran to how I felt. But not having the distraction of having the data was harder than I thought and I found myself sneaking looks when no one was looking.
A quick lap of Princes Park (now IKON Park) and back towards the city on a pretty nice night.
This was a 4 day break and felt better than the previous run that had a 7 day break. The next run will be a 3 day break and if that feels better again we will be able to conclude that, the less rest, the better I will feel. Maybe two on the same day will provide the magic.
And when I finished I was allowed really look at my watch – 1:51:36 which was a bit quicker than I thought – not being pushed by the clock hadn’t affected me too badly.
My Three Learnings
Not checking the numbers on my watch was more difficult than I thought.
The shorter the break between runs the better (maybe).
I can never remember the current name of the Stadium near Southern Cross Station.
