Run 15 – Alma Mater (RMIT). 19/06/2019
We all have days that just don’t work out – well today my Garmin watch had one of those days. First three kilometers into the city was a struggle for the GPS, maybe because it was overcast and drizzly or maybe it was just in a bad mood.
Despite the inaccuracy of my tracking, I headed for the main RMIT campus in Swanston St. Down Bowen St and stopped at building 7 (Chemical Engineering department) for a selfie outside the labs. I certainly spent a lot of time here. Took the opportunity for a toilet break in the Gender Neutral toilets (I’m sure they weren’t there in the 80’s) and then did a quickish lap of the campus before heading to the exhibition buildings where I did most of my exams during my time at RMIT.
Meandered through East Melbourne and around the MCG whilst enjoying my splits due to the benefits of having run some short kilometers at the start of the run. Thanks GPS.
Ran along Brunton Ave to the corner of Punt Rd and just missed the pedestrian lights – no matter, it was only 17 mins before the next green light. Warmed up again as I head towards the Punt Rd hill before the gentle downhill to the St Kilda junction.
With temperatures getting below 10 degrees it was time for the long sleeve top – and whilst that kept me a bit warmer at the start, maybe it affected the GPS? Another variable to test.
My Three Learnings
800m long kilometers are faster to run than the full 1000m long kilometers.
GPS watches have bad days too.
University campuses are not ideal running locations at peak hour.
